Once you have decided to capture the essence of your business in moving pictures, there are a number of decisions to be made and chief amongst these is choosing someone to help you turn your vision into reality. In this blog post, I am going to try to show you how to choose the right film maker.
It doesn’t matter whether you call it a corporate video or a corporate film, the person or company you choose will still have to reflect the style you want to capture and the story you want to tell.
Above all else, remember the final output represents your business and stands as a reflection of your values. It will determine the way your audience perceives your business and the people within it – don’t cut corners or compromise quality.
How to choose the right film maker
When comparing the offering of different production companies, firstly consider their experience. Despite what you hear about Hollywood ‘wunderkind’ you don’t want someone fresh out of film school cutting their teeth on your project.
Look at websites and what is offered. Do you like the sound of the people behind the camera; do they speak your language and understand what corporate films are all about? Take a look at the company’s existing client list if it’s available and watch some of the work completed – it should show the kind of work they’ve done, the variety and the scale of projects.
Some firms may specialise in one type of video, which may be an issue if it doesn’t suit your vision. You’re probably looking for a good all-rounder, used to producing corporate promotional pieces, videos of an event, documentaries and training videos.
Seeing variety in the types of productions they can create to a high standard demonstrates competence and an ability to approach different projects with a fresh and distinctive outlook.
Also consider a company’s relationship with existing and previous clients. Are there testimonials which reveal how happy others have been with the creation process and finished product? Taking a little bit of time to do this research will really pay dividends.
One of the most important aspects of choosing the right partner to produce your film is to know their approach to project development. You need the right level of input; someone happy to listen to your vision and advise when improvements can be made.
You don’t want someone looking to satisfy their blockbuster fantasies on your budget, but someone ready to pitch in with creative suggestions to help you achieve what you want – it’s a shared responsibility.
Choose someone who understands the story you are trying to tell. If you’re not sure of the story you’re telling or how best to portray it, then ask for guidance. This is when you’ll find the best production companies step up and show the difference between genuine corporate film makers and those that understand how a camera works, but the minds of your audience, less so.
